UKRAINE TRANSFERRED ITS ENGINE TECHNOLOGY TO CHINA

<Kanwa news July 10th 1999> In an exclusive interview with KANWA, a source of the Ukrainian military industry indicated that China has now become the largest military trade partner of Ukraine. The cooperation between these two countries focuses on the military power system, including the engines for tanks, planes, and destroyers. In terms of the plane engines, Ukraine has provided the Chinese air force with AI-25TL turbofan engines, which are mainly used in the K8 trainers of Chinese air force version. At present, Ukraine has provided China with the production technology of engines mentioned above. According to the same source, the AI-25TL produces a stronger thrust than does the US-made engine that equips the export version of K8 trainer. The AI-25TL engine has a maximum thrust of 1720 kilograms (TFE731-2A-2A has a maximum thrust of 1633 kilograms.) and the specific fuel consumption of 0.59 kg/kg (TFE731-2A-2A: 0.502 kg/kg). The airflow for the AI-25TL is 46.8 kilograms per sec (TFE731-2A-2A: 52.24 kg/sec.).
On the other hand, the source of the China Aeronautic Technology Import and Export Corporation indicated that twelve K8 trainers of export version with U.S.TFE731-2A-2A engines would be sold to Myanmar this year and that deliveries had already started. In the meantime, Zambia has also signed a purchase contract to import eight same planes. These eight planes will be delivered from this year on. At present, the similar purchase negotiations are underway with Egypt and Zimbabwe.

The AI-25TL is the engine jointly produced by the Ivchenko Progress ZMKB and the Motor Sich PJSC Industrial Complex of Ukraine. It originates from the AI25. A large number of AI25s were used to equip the Czech-made L39 trainers (Kanwa news).
