Greece plans to buy from Russia additional Tor-M1short-range air-defense missiles, to create a layered air defense network capable of effectively protecting the long-range S-300 PMU-1 missiles deployed on Crete. Greece ordered an initial batch of Tor-M1s worth $526 million, and delivery of the 21st system is set for late August of 2000. The contract also includes an option for 29 additional systems, which could boost the deal's value to $1.2 billion. (Itar-Tass, Feb. 28)
