**Despite persistent doubts about the Super Hornet's true capabilities, the Pentagon on Thursday awarded Boeing a five-year, $8.96 billion contract to build 222 new F/A-18E/F jet fighters for the U.S. Navy, out of a planned purchase of up to 548 F/A-18 E/F fighters. (Pentagon announcement, June 15) On June 8, the GAO reported the Super Hornet "does not meet all criteria for multiyear procurement," and that "it did not demonstrate superior operational performance over the existing F-18A/C in extensive operational tests."
