The US Department of Defence has given the Team SBL IFX Joint Venture a second increment of $97 million to fund the next phase of the project, originally costed at approximately $2-3 billion. The first increment was for $125 million
The Space Based Laser Program's Integrated Flight Experiment (SBL IFX) programme is being run by the US Air Force's Space and Missile Systems Centre for the Ballistic Missile Defense Office and is jointly funded by the US Air Force and the Ballistic Missile Defense Organisation. The programme's objective is to conduct a research effort to advance and assess the feasibility of the SBL concept and its technologies, culminating in an SBL ballistic missile defence (BMD) demonstration in space, as well as an assessment of non-BMD mission utility
The SBL IFX project includes ground, flight, and space experiments as needed to test technologies at the component and subsystem level to support design activities for the building of a SBL IFX flight vehicle.
The second phase of the project involves system definition review and continued risk reduction testing in the areas of laser, beam control, and beam direction. It will mature and integrate the component technologies already identified and will include a component and system-level test programme leading to a proof-of-concept-on-orbit demonstration.
This sub-scale flight vehicle will serve as a space test bed for the technologies. More importantly, it provides a focal point for resolving the integration challenges embodied in creating a system that unites precision optics and high energy lasers onto a lightweight spacecraft. Thorough end-to-end ground testing of the vehicle will be conducted prior to flight to create a data base for analysing on-orbit performance.
Team SBL IFX consists of Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and TRW.
