Russia's Zaporizhzhya-based Prohres machine-building bureau has started
the production of AI-450 turboshaft prototypes to be installed on Ka-226
helicopters, Leonid Shiryayev, chief of Russia's Kamov design bureau, said
Tuesday. He said the AI-450 is the best alternative to the
Rolls-Royce-produced engines that are also planned to be mounted on the
Ka-226 helicopters, and is 20-30-per-cent cheaper than its foreign rivals.
The first production engine will be assembled in late 2001- early 2002.
