Russian Air Force to Get Modernized Warplanes
The Russian Air Force will receive up to 100 planes under a modernization
program within the next few years, a military official said on Tuesday. By the
end of 2001, the Air Force will have up to eight Mi-24 helicopters and eight
Mi-8 helicopters. Also, six to eight warplanes of each Su series will be
supplied by the end of this year, Air Force commander Anatoly Kornukov said.
The modernization program is aimed at extending the warplanes` service life,
improving their combat characteristics and developing multi-functional
qualities. It is one of the main guidelines to uphold combat readiness of
Russia`s Air Force, Kornukov said.
