Niobe, together with the brigs Rover (1853) and Musquito (1851), were purchased from the UK on 9 July 1862 (Niobe for £15,892 [£2 million at 2020 prices]) to restore the cadet/boys training fleet. Niobe, a member of the three-ship, sixth-rate Diamond class,3 had been laid down at Devonport in May 1847 and launched in September 1849, but never commissioned into the Royal Navy. Designed for twenty-six 32pdr and two 68pdr guns and costing £22,224 to build, in Prussian service she was first armed with sixteen 68pdrs, four 30pdrs, and six 15cm/22 weapons.
