В последние 20 лет все больше стран обзаводились собственными телекоммуникационными, метеорологическими и военными спутниками на геостационарной орбите. В результате на ГСО стало тесно. Среднее расстояние между спутниками составляет около 500 километров, а на некоторых ее участках тяжелые аппараты «висят» всего в нескольких десятках километров друг от друга. Это может вызывать помехи при связи и даже приводить к столкновениям.
Возвращать спутники с высокой орбиты на Землю слишком дорого. Поэтому для расчистки ГСО было решено, что после завершения активной эксплуатации они должны на остатках топлива переводиться на «орбиту захоронения», расположенную на 200—300 километров выше. Это «кладбище спутников» пока гораздо свободнее рабочей орбиты.(С)

Надеюсь, "Галакси" 15-й просто прикидывается, делая вид, что принимает команды. А то ведь собьют еще от греха подальше противоспутниковой ракетой, не дадут грохнуть какой-нибудь дорогостоящий проект (типа пилотируемого полета на Марс).

А смысл его грохать? Обломки-то так и останутся на геостационаре, и загадят его весь. Лучше уж он там будет одним куском летать, от него тогда хоть увернуться можно будет.

Engineers have regained communications with a rogue Intelsat broadcasting satellite that spent nearly nine months traversing the populated arc of geosynchronous satellites responsible for television services for the Americas.

Its threat to other satellites now diminished, Galaxy 15 is responding to commands and ground controllers are receiving telemetry to the spacecraft, Intelsat announced this week.
"The situation evolved favorably over the holidays, with a reset completed and telemetry now regularly being received from the satellite," said Nick Mitsis, an Intelsat spokesperson. "The satellite no longer poses any threat to other operators or satellite users."
Galaxy 15 stopped communicating with engineers in April, but the craft continued blaring powerful C-band television signals as it drifted uncontrollably through geosynchronous orbit 22,300 miles above the equator.
A solar storm may have crippled the satellite, but officials are still investigating the root cause of the anomaly.
Between April and December, Galaxy 15 passed by more than a dozen operational C-band communications satellites owned by Intelsat, SES, Telesat of Canada and Satmex of Mexico. Satellite operators reported no significant disruptions in communications.
Officials were concerned Galaxy 15's television broadcast signals would interfere with transmissions coming from operational satellites. Engineers devised novel avoidance maneuvers as Galaxy 15 slowly moved east along the equator.
Intelsat and Orbital Sciences Corp., Galaxy 15's manufacturer, had difficulty predicting when the spacecraft would lose Earth lock and reset its electronics. Engineers expected the craft's orientation-controlling reaction wheels would become saturated with momentum, causing the satellite to lose attitude lock on Earth and drain its batteries of electricity.
The electronics reset was initially anticipated in August, but Galaxy 15 continued functioning for months longer until finally succumbing to the loss of attitude control in mid-December.
According to Intelsat, Galaxy 15's electronics suite reset Dec. 23. The satellite soon began accepting commands and controllers got their first look at the craft's health since April.
"Over the next many weeks, we'll complete some diagnostics, update software, and ultimately move it to one of our orbital locations to complete the extensive testing necessary to determine the functionality of the satellite," Mitsis told Spaceflight Now.
The satellite continues drifting, but Intelsat expects to stabilize the craft's orbit within weeks. Intelsat hopes to recover full functionality of Galaxy 15 and return it to commercial service, according to a posting on the company's website.

Intelsat has regained control of its runaway Galaxy 15 telecommunications satellite, which stopped responding to commands in April and had been drifting around the Earth along the principal orbital highway, and is guiding it to a test location to determine whether it can be returned to commercial service, Intelsat officials said.
What Intelsat and the satellite’s manufacturer, Orbital Sciences Corp., had predicted would occur did in fact occur, if several months later than expected: Galaxy 15’s ability to remain oriented toward the Earth gradually deteriorated; its solar arrays then lost contact with the sun, leading to the draining of its batteries and full system shutdown.
A full reset maneuver followed. Commands from the ground to return the satellite to sun-pointing orientation worked as designed, and as expected, Galaxy 15 was brought back to controlled status.
Dianne J. VanBeber, Intelsat’s vice president for investor relations and communications, said Jan. 7 that Galaxy 15 is being guided along the geostationary arc 36,000 kilometers above the equator at a speed of 0.3 degrees per day and will be subjected to several weeks of testing once it reaches 93 degrees west. The satellite is expected to arrive at that location around Jan. 15.
VanBeber said a board of inquiry that has been studying what happened to the satellite is expected to deliver its conclusions by the end of January. Already, Dulles, Va.-based Orbital Sciences and its current satellite customers have modified in-orbit satellites of a similar design, and retrofitted satellites under construction, to reduce the likelihood of a similar situation.
The special drama of Galaxy 15 was not in its size or financial value to Intelsat, but rather the fact that its telecommunications payload remained stuck in the “on” position, looking for signals to rebound back to Earth, as the satellite drifted from one occupied orbital slot to another. It passed through the orbital slots of about 15 satellites owned by operators including SES of Luxembourg, Telesat of Canada and Mexico’s Satmex.
The risk of a collision between Galaxy 15 and one of the satellites whose neighborhood it drifted into was never considered high as satellite operators know where their assets are and can move them to a corner of their orbital stations while waiting for Galaxy 15 to move out of the area.
But preventing signal interference, especially to C-band satellites in whose territory the C-band-equipped Galaxy 15 was moving, was a challenge. Washington- and Luxembourg-based Intelsat and the first competitor affected by Galaxy 15, SES, devised a strategy that permitted SES customers to continue sending signals, in part through the use of an Intelsat-owned ground antenna, to the SES spacecraft without drawing the attention of Galaxy 15.

Nassif said Intelsat remains confident that Galaxy 15 will be brought back to normal commercial service without any increased risk of returning to rogue status. He said Intelsat and Orbital have tested the reset maneuver on the ground since April and have concluded that switching on the satellite will not trigger a repeat of a loss of control. Launched in October 2005 on a planned 15-year mission, the satellite has enough on-board fuel remaining that Intelsat and Orbital Sciences will try to recover its full functions.
There are more than 100 retired or defective satellites performing a slow seesaw drift in geostationary orbit. These dead satellites are nuisances, but operators of active satellites know where they are and how to avoid them when they enter the orbital neighborhood of an active spacecraft.

После успешного обуздания (примерно с конца февраля) блудного зомбика погнали обратно на запад. По состоянию на 19 марта он был на долготе 120°з.д.
Интересно, куда его в итоге приткнут? По логике вещей - надо бы в 133°з.д. - туда, где он и стоял изначально; тем более, что у него помимо обычных транспондеров присутствует и ретранслятор L-диапазона для WAAS.

А между тем клиент прибыл на старое место жительства (еще в первой половине апреля). То есть все вполне логично.
