ARLINGTON, Va. — The Navy plans to retire 17 ships in fiscal 2015, including all of the remaining Perry-class frigates and the last Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, according to an internal naval message. Many of the ships will be made available for transfer to other navies under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS)program.
The Perry-class frigates listed below will be decommissioned, followed by the date in 2015 and expected disposition, such as an FMS availability:
USS McClusky (FFG 41), Jan. 14, FMS.
USS Elrod (FFG 55) Jan. 30, FMS.
USS Ingraham (FFG 61), Jan. 30, dismantlement.
USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60) March 21, FMS.
USS Vandegrift (FFG 48), March 31, FMS.
USS Taylor (FFG 50), May 8, FMS.
USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) May 22, dismantlement.
USS Gary (FFG 51), Aug. 5, FMS.
USS Simpson (FFG 56), Aug. 14, FMS.
USS Kauffman (FFG 59) Sep. 21, FMS.
Los Angeles-class attack submarines to be inactivated, date and disposition:
USS La Jolla (SSN 701), Dec. 1, 2014, Moored training ship conversion.
USS Norfolk (SSN 714), Dec. 15, 2014, dismantlement.
Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship to be decommissioned:
USS Peleliu (LHA 5), March 31, held in reserve.
Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship to be decommissioned:
USS Defender (MCM 2), Oct. 1, 2014, dismantlement.
Supply-class fast combat support ship to be removed from service:
USNS Rainier (T-AOE 7) Sept. 30, 2015, held in reserve.
Oceanographic research ships to be removed from service:
R/V Melville (AGOR 14), Oct. 1, 2014, FMS.
R/V Knorr (AGOR 15) Dec. 31, 2014, FMS.
The message also changed the fiscal 2014 disposition of one Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ship:
USNS Sumner (T-AGS 61) Sept. 30, Interagency transfer to the Maritime Administration.
The message noted that the disposition of Supply-class fast combat support ship USNS Rainier is under review.
