Firefinder Weapon Locating Radar for India
5 March 2002
The US Defense Security Co-operation Agency has notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to India of Firefinder weapon locating radars. The package consists of eight AN/TPQ-37 Firefinder Weapon locating systems and 26 AN/VRC-90E SINCGAR radios with their associated equipment and technical, logistic and maintenance support. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $146 Million.
These radar sets will provide an increase in counter-battery artillery capability consistent with India's force planning and defence strategy. India needs these SINCGARS radio systems to fulfil their strategic commitments for complete communicative interoperability and standardisation of equipment and to be able to communicate with their various vehicles and US forces. India will have no difficulty absorbing these radar sets into their armed forces.
The principal contractors will be the Raytheon Hughes Aircraft Corporation of El Segundo, California and ITT Company of Fort Wayne, Indiana. There are no offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
