A twin-engine plane carrying five people from Eleuthera, Bahamas, crashed into the ocean off John U. Lloyd State Park Tuesday, killing one man and injuring four others.
The pilot of the 1979 PA-31 Piper radioed the tower at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport just before 6 p.m. to say the craft was in trouble, rescue workers said.
Minutes later, hundreds of people gathered at the Dania Beach pier for an Orange Bowl (news - web sites) party and fireworks saw the plane crash about 200 yards offshore. Those spectators included nearly two dozen Broward Sheriff's Office deputies as well as firefighters, lifeguards and paramedics assigned to work at the event.
