The design of Gem was completed in 1999 and China is very satisfied with the product. It is scheduled for delivery to China at the end of this year. A flat-plate antenna, instead of the latest Russian-made phased-array antenna system, is used for this radar system. This makes it easier to produce a large quantity of antennas and helps reduce costs.

Mr. Kanashchenkov was not sure what China would use the radar for. However, he said that this radar system weighed far less than the Zhuk27 radar now used in the SU27. Obviously, China may use Gem for the new light-duty fighter-bombers such as J10 or FC1 of the Chinese air force version. (Kanwa news Moscow)
