Jane's Intelligence Watch Report - Daily Update
30-Aug-2004 02:11:10
Volume/Issue: 11/173
Vanguard newspaper reported on 29 August that Nigerian police have sought the help of INTERPOL after the detained 12,000-tonne cargo ship MT African Pride sailed from Nigerian waters. The ship is crucial to the prosecution in a case of the theft of a large quantity of crude oil, which is currently on trial before a Federal High Court. The ship was taken into custody in 2003 along the Benin River between the Nigerian delta and Edo and Bayelsa states with 12,000 tonnes of crude oil. The naval and police intelligence services believe that the ship is currently in international waters between Ghana and Benin. Naval authorities have launched a helicopter search for the ship within Nigerian territorial waters. The police source added: 'There is no way we will not get that ship. It can run but can't hide because we have secured all necessary documents for its arrest anywhere in the world.' The source added that the ship had been unable to anchor inn Nigeria's shallow waters, so it had to be anchored in international waters.
