Russian-American anti-terrorist joint exercise code-named “Pacific Eagle-2011” has started near the island of Guam.

The Russian task force is led by the flag ship of the Pacific Fleet, Varyag guided missile cruiser and also includes Irkut medium tanker. The guided missile destroyers USS Fitzgerald and USS McCampbell will join Russian Federation Navy forces to conduct Exercise Pacific Eagle 2011, says the commander of the Pacific Fleet Roman Martov.

“On Friday, the active phase of the exercise started. In the first half of the day, Russian and American warships worked out the coordination of joint action in fighting against piracy. According to the scenario, special groups from an American destroyer examined the Russian tanker Irkut, while the Russian sailors embarked on the American destroyer Fitzgerald. According to the exercise, the destroyer is seized by pirates. The second half of the day is devoted to artillery fire by Russian and American sailors on floating targets,” Roman Martov said.
The joint exercise started near the Mariana Islands on Thursday. The Russian and American navy units worked out the reception of signals and establishment of communications. To this end, they used flags in the daytime, and projectors at night. They will master their skills in joint manoeuvring. This is one of the most responsible episodes in an operation aimed at detaining pirates.
Russia and the U.S. also coordinate their efforts in fighting against hijacking planes. Their air force units were involved in anti-terrorist exercises aimed at working out methods to fight against hijacking held in Europe and Turkey in the past summer. This is one of the most successful areas in bilateral cooperation. Skills acquired by the two countries will help them to coordinate their action in a combat situation.
