Standard Missile Completes First Test Launch from Aegis Ashore Test Site
The Missile Defense Agency, the U.S. Navy, and sailors at the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Test Complex and Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), successfully conducted the first flight test involving components of the Aegis Ashore system.
During the test, a simulated ballistic missile target was acquired, tracked, and engaged by the Aegis Weapon System. At approximately 7:35 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time, May 20 (1:35 a.m. EDT, May 21), the Aegis Weapon System fired a Standard Missile (SM)-3 Block IB guided missile from the Vertical Launch System. Several fire control and engagement functions were exercised during the test. A live target missile launch was not planned for this flight test.
The primary purpose of the test, designated Aegis Ashore Controlled Test Vehicle (AA CTV)-01, was to confirm the functionality of Aegis Ashore by launching a land-based SM-3. The Aegis Ashore system uses a nearly identical configuration of the Vertical Launch System, fire control system, and SPY-1 radar currently in use aboard Aegis cruisers and destroyers deployed around the world.
This flight test supports development of the Aegis Ashore capability of Phase 2 of the European Phased Adaptive Approach, planned to begin operations in Romania in 2015.

U.S. skips Aegis Ashore missile test after target malfunction
The U.S. Missile Defense Agency on Friday said a target malfunction caused it to abort a key intercept test of the Aegis Ashore missile defense system, built by Lockheed Martin Corp, that is due to be installed in Romania this year.
"Due to a target malfunction, the test wasn't conducted and an interceptor wasn't launched," said Rick Lehner, a spokesman for the U.S. Defense Department agency.
No comment was immediately available from Lockheed. Raytheon Co, which builds the SM-3 missile used by the Aegis Ashore system, the land-based version of the Aegis combat system deployed on U.S. Navy destroyers, as well as its AN/SPY-1 radar, referred questions to the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.
It was not immediately clear what caused the target to malfunction, or when the test would be rescheduled.
The new Aegis Ashore system is designed to defeat short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

PACIFIC MISSILE RANGE FACILITY, KAUAI, Hawaii, Dec. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — The Missile Defense Agency conducted the first intercept test of a Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) Land-Based Standard Missile-3 Block IB from the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Test Complex. The SM-3 destroyed an intermediate range ballistic missile target in space by using remote track data from an AN/TPY-2 ballistic missile defense radar in a 'launch-on-remote' engagement.
The test's success keeps the Aegis Ashore program and the SM-3 Block IB on track for deployment in Romania by the end of this year, in line with the second phase of the Phased Adaptive Approach, the U.S.'s plan for missile defense in Europe.
"In many ways, the SM-3 system is the crown jewel of ballistic missile defense," said Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence, Raytheon Missile Systems president. "No other sea- and land-based regional missile defense system comes close in terms of range and defended area, especially when paired with the AN/TPY-2 radar."
The SM-3 and AN/TPY-2 have been used together in flight tests before.
"The range and discrimination of the AN/TPY-2 radar combined with the range and speed of an SM-3 provide incredible coverage, which is why both systems are core elements of the global ballistic missile defense system," said Tom Laliberty, vice president of missile defense programs at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems.
