Based on requirements to keep only one DSRV rescue-ready at all times, the Navy inactivated the DSRV Avalon in November 2000. DSRV-2, serves as a source of spare parts for DSRV-1.
Avalon has been brought into the barn and all the "HazMat removed" . Talk is they are going to do an implosion test on her. Mystic is next, then off to a museum somewhere. Crew is gone, and it is sitting out on the LTV next to the fence, dripping oil, pretty sad.
The DSRVs have been replaced by the tongue-twisting Submarine Rescue Diving and Recompression System’s (SRDRS) Rescue Capable System (RCS), described by the Navy as a rapidly deployable rescue asset that can be delivered by air or ground, installed on military or commercial vessels of opportunity, and mated to a distressed submarine within 72 hours.
