Section I. MECHANIZED INFANTRY RIFLE PLATOON EMPLOYMENT
Despite any technological advantages our armed forces might have over an enemy, the only way to gain the decision in battle is by close combat between ground forces. Mechanized infantry rifle forces equipped with the Bradley fighting vehicle (BFV) play the following main roles in close combat situations:
1-1. CLOSE COMBAT
BFV-equipped infantry rifle platoons and rifle squads normally operate as part of a larger force. They benefit from the support of armor, artillery, mortars, close air support, helicopters, air defense, and engineers.

A-1. RIFLE PLATOON
Most units operate from a modified table of organization and equipment (MTOE) based on their organization, mission, and location. There are five different types of rifle platoon organizations. These rifle platoons are discussed below.
a. The light infantry rifle platoon consists of three rifle squads and a platoon headquarters with two machine gun teams (Figure A-1). Each machine gun team consists of two men--a machine gunner and an assistant machine gunner.
b. The infantry, air assault, and airborne rifle platoons consist of a platoon headquarters, three rifle squads, and a weapons squad (Figures A-2 through A-4).

2-1. GENERAL
The platoon is a basic combat unit capable of maneuvering in the conduct of combat operations. The platoon can fight as part of a pure mechanized infantry company or as part of a company team that is task organized with tank platoons and mechanized infantry platoons. In either case, the platoon can establish a base of fire and then move other elements to seek an advantageous position from which to destroy or dislocate the enemy.
On the battlefield, the platoon can expect rapid and frequent movement.

Rifle Squad Leader. The rifle squad leader is responsible for all that the squad does or fails to do. He is a tactical leader and leads by example. The rifle squad leader—
Controls the maneuver of his squad and its rate and distribution of fire. He controls two fire teams in the offense; selects each fighting position in the defense; and gives the proper commands and signals to commence, cease, and shift fires.
Briefs operations orders to the squad.
Trains his squad on individual and collective tasks required to sustain combat effectiveness.
Manages the logistical and administrative needs of his squad. Requests and issues ammunition, water, rations, and special equipment.
Maintains accountability of soldiers and equipment.
Completes casualty feeder reports and reviews casualty reports completed by squad members.
Directs maintenance of squad weapons and equipment.
Inspects the condition of soldiers' weapons, clothing, and equipment.
Ensures material and supplies are distributed to the soldiers in the squad.
Keeps the platoon leader and platoon sergeant informed of squad supply status and squad requirements.
Ensures supplies and equipment are internally cross-leveled within the squad.
Assists the VC in maintaining the ICV.
e.
Team Leader. Two fire team leaders are in each squad and are usually associated with a specific ICV. They lead by example and control the movement and fires of the fire team. They assist the squad leader in tactical control of the squad and in training team members on individual and collective tasks and battle drills. Team leaders provide the necessary local security and maintenance support for the ICV and are responsible for the welfare of their teams. The team leader sends digital SITREPs as requested by the squad leader or as his team makes contact. Using OTN equipment, he controls fire and distribution for his team by designating and marking targets.
