If IOWA or even MONTANA were to go up against YAMATO, she had better get
MANY more hits than she takes--YAMATO's armor is practically proof against
IOWA/MONTANA at all but the longest range (decks), where both sides can
punch each other, if they hit (which is rare), or point-blank, where all of
IOWA and MONTANA are vulnerable and hits will be frequent, but some of
YAMATO (turret faces, for example) is not, barring a hit in a gun port or
some odd-ball thing like that.
The greatly superior fire-control and slightly higher rate of fire of IOWA
and considerably greater rate of fire (12 guns to 9) of MONTANA can make a
big difference in many cases, but it doesn't take many hits in the wrong
place to do a ship in (only one hit if you are HOOD, for example).
Therefore, the chance of hitting had better be WAY on the side of
IOWA/MONTANA (gang up using more ships or fight in bad weather where their
radar gives them an advantage) or they had better not allow themselves to be
suckered into such a fight in the first place (as if you had much choice in
most wars!!).
